Karine Hovhannisyan is regarded as the foremost kanun (72-string Middle Eastern lap harp) player of her generation. She studied with the legendary composer and kanunist Khachatur Avetisyan, whose most important works for the kanun are recorded here, including the virtuosic concerto for kanun and orchestra recorded with the Armenian Opera Orchestra. Also included rare gems by Sayat Nova, Komitas and others with members of the Shoghakn Ensemble. Booklet includes and introduction essay by Sahan Arzruni and a chapter about the history and origins of the kanun.
Born in Yerevan, Armenia, in 1966, kanunist Karine Hovhannisyan is a graduate of Tigran Chukhadjyan and Arno Babadjanyan Music Schools. A winner of the Sayat Nova Competition, Ms. Hovhannisyan is now on the faculty of the Komitas State Conservatory and a member of the Armenian State Dance Ensemble. She is a member of the Shoghaken Ensemble having performed with the group at Theatre de la Ville in Paris, the “White Nights Festival” in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Rudolstadt Festival in Germany and a major US tour with performances in Carnegie Hall, The Kimmell Center, Cornell University, Dartmouth, Cleveland Museum of Art, JFK Center for the Performing Arts, Los Angeles Skirball Museum and UC Berkeley. |
