How To Make Your Husband A Sultan - With Özel Türkbas
How To Make Your Husband A Sultan - With Özel Türkbas
The 1960s classic that first introduced Americans to authentic Turkish bellydance, and to some of the great Turkish nightclub musicians of the 20th century, including the legendary Turkish-Gypsy clarinet player Mustafa Kandirali--all under the guise of that swing-era staple, the art of domestic seduction. Produced by and featuring the famous Turkish dancer Özel Türkbas, first brought to America to dance by Italian movie director Franco Zeferelli, the album sold 150,000 copies in the US (and a million in Turkey), spawning the craze for bellydance and Turkish music that continues today. Notes include Özel’s original bellydance instructions with pictures. “A practice run through with the record,” she promised, “and tonight you can be bellydancing for that luckiest of men--your sultan!”

Lalezar-Music of the Sultans, Sufis, and Seraglio Vol. I - Sultan Composers
Lalezar - Music of the Sultans, Sufis, and Seraglio Vol. I - Sultan Composers
Volume I showcases music written by the imperial sultans themselves, whose devotion to composing and performing intricate Ottoman art music is one of the cultural marvels of the Empire. Lalezar covers 5 centuries of sultan composers, including Murad IV (1623-40), known best for his military campaigns and homicidal purges, Selim III (1789-1808), whose masterpiece Sevkutarab kâr has never before been recorded, and the last sultan Mehmed VI (1918-1922), whose haunting verses capture the spirit of an empire in its last throes.

Lalezar - Music of the Sultans, Sufis, and Seraglio Vol. II - Music of the Dancing Boys
Lalezar - Music of the Sultans, Sufis, and Seraglio Vol. II - Music of the Dancing Boys
Volume II delves into the mysterious world of the köçek dancers, the boys dressed in women's attire who for over two centuries entertained at courts and taverns in Istanbul. Castigated for their ambiguous sexuality by early Western travellers and banned by imperial authorities in the 19th century because of the riots they provoked among fans and their descent into prostitution, many köçek dancers eventually emigrated to Egypt. Still, the köçek repertoire, an intoxicating mix of classical, Sufi, Anatolian and Balkan elements, has been one of the most enduring, finding its way into popular Turkish music today.

Soundscapes - The Secret Trio
Soundscapes - The Secret Trio - Ara Dinkjian - oud, Tamer Pinabasi - kanun, Ismail Lumanovski - clarinet
Ara Dinkjian - oud Tamer Pinabasi - kanun Ismail Lumanovski - clarinet The Secret Trio is made up of three astounding musicians who came together to create a new type of chamber music, combining the elements of sound, texture and rhythm with new and interesting approaches to their instruments. Not bound to a single tradition, they perform a collection of original pieces and traditional melodies that fuses the microtonal modes and improvisation of the Middle East, dance beats of the Balkans, and elements of jazz, Rock, classical and world music. The delicate harmonies, rapid-fire synchrony and intricate counterpoint developed by a trio of musicians with separate roots in Turkish, Armenian and Macedonian Roma music is extraordinary. By inventing new ways to play percussively on fundamentally melodic instruments, the ensemble, full of rhythm and drive, harmony and counterpoint, never sounds like only three instruments. In that the energy of live music is essential to the ensemble’s ideology, this recording was made without the use of any overdubs in order to capture the excitement of their live concerts.

Udi Hrant
Udi Hrant
For anyone who has picked up an ud, the name Hrant Kenkulian remains alone, a legend akin to that of Segovia or Horowitz. As an innovator of modern ud technique and interpreter of the eastern modal system, his contribution has influenced virtually every living udist. Born in the last stages of the Ottoman Empire, the blind Armenian musician is considered one of the greatest masters of the 12-stringed, fretless lute. Previously unissued, these tapes were recently discovered, having been recorded in New York during his tour to the United States in 1950. Available on CD or cassette.

Album Profile: Udi Hrant Kenkulian, the blind master of the Ud, the twelve-stringed, fretless lute is regarded as the grandfather of modern ud playing and one of the most unique singers of what some refer to as the Middle-Eastern Blues. Following the success of the first Udi Hrant album (TCROS 4265) we have compiled the complete early recordings transferred from the original discs, including many of his original compositions, rare recordings of Hrant playing the violin, and ud solos. Also included are his most famous taksims (improvisations) recorded when Hrant was only nineteen. Udi Yorgo Bacanos
Udi Yorgo Bacanos
Udi Yorgo Bacanos, the standard-bearer of the modern school of Turkish ud playing, is the kind of musician that musicians listen to. If his contemporary, the great blind master Udi Hrant (CD 4265, 4270, 4271), was the soul of the ud, then Yorgo was the intellect. His technique and musicality have been admired by virtually every middle-eastern musician of his time and ours. In the 1920s, Yorgo travelled throughout Europe and the Middle East, spreading his art to Egypt, where he collaborated with the renowned diva Umm Kulthum. This collection includes his landmark recordings from 1920 to 1960, as well as rare radio broadcasts of his most famous performances, never before issued commercially.
